Tamil Letters with Words

Tamil letters are commonly used to write the Tamil language, as well as other languages such as Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Sanskrit. While it may look intimidating at first glance, once you learn some of the most common characters, you’ll find that Tamil letters are pretty easy to remember and fun to use! This article will teach you how to read Tamil letters with just five words.

எ, ஒ, க், கு

In Tamil language, each letter has a word associated with it. These words can be used as greetings or pleasantries. எ is often used as an informal way to say hello, which sounds something like ayy. However, it’s usually reserved for Tamil-speaking communities and friends only. For example: Ayya (for men) / Ayi (for women) + Name + uL This greeting is used when addressing people who are older than you, or in formal settings where strangers meet each other for the first time. ஒ (Oh) and க் (K) are both commonly used as polite versions of hello.

Vowels in Tamil

There are five basic vowels in Tamil: ai, e, o, u and ai. Each of these vowels can be either short or long. Short vowels are marked by a single stroke across them. Long vowels have two strokes drawn over them. The vowel that is written as a dot or a circle always refers to an unpronounced vowel – it is only for writing purposes and does not actually make any sound.

Consonants in Tamil

A consonant in Tamil is represented by a letter when it is not followed by an alphabetic character (consonants are often called jāyī ஜயி). The following table shows all possible combinations of letters and vowels. The vowel diacritics, which are used to differentiate between Tamil vowel sounds that have no difference in script, are not shown below. Because there are multiple ways to represent many characters and because of glyphic variations within each script, only representative glyphs are shown. Unless otherwise noted, capital letters (uppercase) have been selected for these charts.

Colloquial Tamil

Tamil is a Dravidian language, related to other languages such as Malayalam and Kannada. Tamil has been in existence for over 2000 years and it is an extremely colloquial language compared to Malayalam or Kannada which are both Sanskrit-based. Tamil Nadu is one of India’s most prosperous states, having a literacy rate of 80%. In order to cater for its large non-English speaking population, all official government communications in Tamil must be translated into English. For example, all college syllabi and examination papers must be translated into English as well. A majority of students studying outside Tamil Nadu will also study Tamil in school so that they are able to communicate fluently with those around them.
