Wix SEO: How to Optimize Your Wix Site for Search Engines

Running a Wix website that’s not ranked on the first page of Google? If so, you’re not alone; lots of other Wix users have run into the same issue. Because search engines like Google and Bing know that people use them to look up products and services, they tend to rank sites that get lots of links to their homepage as well as quality content high in their search results. If you want your Wix site to appear higher in search results, here are some easy-to-follow tips on how to optimize your Wix site for search engines using SEO.

Be Notified of Google Updates

One of Google’s updates targets websites with low-quality content, which is why it’s important to optimize your site.

If you’re using Wix, a great way to do that is by using all of its built-in optimization features.

First, be sure that you’re using titles and descriptions in your website copy; remember that each web page has only 300 characters (including spaces).

Another way is to have a site map on your website and make sure every page has a title tag. Finally, use keywords wisely—try not to overdo it or you could get penalized. In general, don’t use keywords more than 5 times per 100 words on any given page, and limit their placement in titles and URL slugs.

Remove Duplicate Meta Data in Header

Duplicate metadata in header tags can be a big problem. Even though your site may be picked up by search engines, you’ll end up with duplicate results being shown for your content.

This is bad for Google and bad for users. Be sure that you have one meta description tag only (it should go before all other elements) and no more than one meta title tag. Just because it’s technically possible doesn’t mean it’s a good idea!

Clean Up Your Title Tags

In 2014, Google announced that they will be using title tags as part of their algorithm. Don’t let your business suffer by having untrustworthy or spammy titles.

Properly optimize your title tags and you’ll begin showing up higher in search results, ultimately bringing more traffic to your site. If you want to start seeing gains from on-page SEO optimization, make sure your titles are relevant and accurate—just like a good real estate agent!

Get Rid of Flash

Flash is a great tool that can be used effectively in creating a website, but when it comes to search engine optimization (SEO), Flash doesn’t make things easy.

This program essentially gives search engines an incomplete picture of your website, and unless you direct them otherwise, they will try to index information that’s already irrelevant due to its inability to process Flash.

While there are ways around some of these issues (specifically having keywords within your flash files), it’s not worth it when making your site accessible by all search engines is so easy. The first step in optimizing your Wix site for seo should be getting rid of flash altogether and moving on with HTML5 instead.

Choose Relevant Keywords

Keywords are important because they help people find your site. What do you want someone searching on Google or Bing to type in when they’re looking for a company like yours?

Knowing what words and phrases you want to be associated with your company are crucial, especially if your business is new or somewhat obscure.

You also want to make sure that you choose keywords that are relevant and timely. For example, if you sell high-quality office supplies, it doesn’t make sense to include Swiffer Sweepstakes as a keyword in your title tag—it’s irrelevant. But including an office chair or computer desk might be helpful in getting more search traffic from people looking for such products online.

Backlink Building

Seo is like having a giant billboard on a busy highway. The only way your message will be heard (and hopefully acted upon) is if someone sees it and clicks through.

And just like a billboard, if you want people to visit your site, you’re going to need something that stands out. Backlinks are what search engines use as cues when determining which sites are relevant or important in any given field—like billboards on a superhighway, they help potential visitors know what sites are most likely worth their time.

So when you’re building backlinks, make sure you have links coming from other sites that matter.

Going Mobile Friendly

Many people look at their websites on their phones before making any changes or improvements. That’s a great idea and one that can help keep you in touch with your target audience.

A good way to optimize your site is by creating responsive themes (often called responsive design), which automatically adjust so your site looks great no matter what device it’s being viewed on. Getting it done right requires a little knowledge of coding, but it’s relatively easy and well worth it if you want more mobile traffic.

Migrating to HTML5 From Flash Can Hurt You

Google Analytics is a powerful analytics software that you can use to analyze your site’s traffic data. This includes where your visitors are coming from, what they’re clicking on, and much more. To track a domain or subdomain using Google Analytics on Wix, navigate to your dashboard, click Website, then Site Settings.

From there, go into Account and choose Google Analytics under Analytics & Tracking. Choose whether you want all pages or just certain ones tracked and enter any information Google asks for like a website code (UA-00000000-1) and username/password. Once that’s complete, Google will begin tracking traffic numbers on those pages it was set up on.

Google Analytics Setup on Wix Website

First, you’ll need to install Google Analytics. To do so, go to your website admin and select Settings under General Settings (you might also select Home).

Then, click on Install Google Analytics tracking code. Click on Yes I’ve Installed it Before since there isn’t an option for what kind of website you have or if you use an app.

After clicking on Yes I’ve Installed it Before, copy and paste the tracking code by selecting Paste Code into HTML Header Section. Finally, click on Save Changes at the bottom of the page. This process should take just a few minutes from start to finish.
